An Environment for Thinking

“Childhood is filled with natural wonder and curiosity. The learning environment must reflect a classroom and outdoor space that inspires a sense of wanting to investigate, to find out and to explore.”
Kathy Walker
“A great classroom environment comes from the heart not the wallet. Its built on love, laughter, and a feeling that everyone belongs.”

At Glenmoor and Winton  we strive to offer welcoming and resourceful environments for students to learn effectively. We do not have a prescribed classroom layout as we believe each teacher, each classroom and indeed each class need a tailored approach that best fits the needs of all involved. However, we have focused on a number of small but we believe significant ideas to create environments and resources for thinking. These include:

Bespoke Visual Tool and de Bono reference boards
We designed boards for every classroom that highlight the 8 Thinking maps and Edward de Bono’s 6 Hat Thinking and CoRT 1 tools. This is to allow all staff and students to have a visual reference point for thinking. Click here for images. The tools for thinking are also an integral part of our exercise books which we have designed ourselves and our school planner. Click here for images. This ensures that students have a toolbox reference wherever they are.
SAS Boards
SAS stands for stretch and support. This was a simple, cost effective but impactful idea that we designed to help staff and students differentiate and support students explicitly. The SAS boards come in many forms but they share common themes of providing challenging questions or material for those that progress quickly and giving supportive clues or ideas to those who are finding the work more challenging.
