Vision:
During Year 7, students will complete a core skills course which is then applied and developed in year 8 and 9. The aim is to develop skills in the different disciplines that fit under the design technology umbrella: catering, textiles and product design. These years will provide a base knowledge for the GCSE.

Each lesson in this term students will learn about a key concept which underpins design.

Topic title: Card modeling
Pupils will develop their skills in prototyping by learning a read of card modeling techniques. They will look at the role of a prototype in the design process in industry and consider the environmental implications of design.

Topic title: Talk like a designer.
Pupils will develop their oracy and prepare a presentation to talk about the key design aspects of a chosen product.
Topic title: Ergonomic design.
Pupils will make a prototype of an ergonomic pen using the cardboard modeling skills they developed in the spring term

Practical:
Pupils will work through a recipe book designed to build their knowledge of different recipe components and increase their skill level.

Topic title: Working to a Brief (AO1-3)
Brief 1: Summer Picnic
Pupils will respond to a brief to plan a summer picnic for a specific life stage. Pupils will apply the learning from the previous half term to the set brief.
Practical: pupils will cook a range of picnic foods selected by the teacher before making their own choice based on their findings.
Brief 2: Waste Not, Want Not Bistro
Pupils will work to plan a menu for a bistro. They will learn about a range of environmental factor s that will affect the menu choices before planning a menu suitable for the set task.
Practical: Pupils will learn presentation skills and then apply them to the dishes selected to fit the brief.
